Plum Blossom Trees are one of the “Four Gentlemen” that all Chinese Brush Painting students must learn to paint. They have been enjoyed in Chinese culture, art & poetry for centuries. They bloom in winter before the snow melts, demonstrating perseverance & strength, as well as hope of the coming Spring. Arriving in time to help welcome the Chinese New Year, they symbolize beauty, purity & vitality of life.

Introduction
Plum Tree Structure
Flowers in Detail (ink & color)
Significance of the Branches
Essence of the Tree Trunk & Main Branches
Creating a Composition (contour style)
Creating a Composition (boneless style)
Thank you, Wrap up with Pictures & Tips

I begin the lesson by explaining the basic tree structure. I teach how to paint the individual flower components using 3 methods, side-by-side for easy comparison. As one of the “Four Gentlemen”, I explain the ancient symbolism of the branches & trunk, while showing you how to capture the essence of this majestic tree. Practicing these parts separately will help you put them together in a composition. It is common to paint only a section of a plum blossom tree. In this video, I demonstrate how to create simple branch compositions in both the contour & the boneless styles. As always following the lesson we have included tips, reminders & pictures.

How to paint the flowers in detail (ink & color) in my new Plum Blossom tree video

In the next lesson, I will introduce “Rocks” – an important part of “Landscaping” as well as a supporting role in compositions such as birds & flowers.

Please be sure to ask any questions in the comments section!

With kindest wishes,
Vena

A special note to my dear friend, Cindy:
Thank you for graciously inviting us to your home so we could enjoy your wonderful garden & study the Plum Blossom trees in person!! We would like to express our sincerest gratitude for your generosity!

We hope the close-up pictures of live flowers will help students understand the shapes & capture the Essence of the beautiful plum flowers, branches & trunk in their paintings.

“Five Good Luck” New Year’s Blessing

Morning Glory video released!

Hi Everyone! My latest video “Morning Glory Flowers using Ink & Color” has been released!

CLICK HERE to see the video.

In Boneless Style painting, it is common to use ink for some parts of the painting & color for others. For this lesson, we will paint the flowers in color. We will use ink for the greenery.

Here is an overview of what is covered in the video from the “Description”:
(Below the video, click on SHOW MORE to read the complete video description – or use the down arrow, if you are viewing the lesson on a mobile device.)

Morning Glory flowers are a favorite flower in Chinese Brush Painting. Because the flowers are large, brightly colored & fragrant, they attract butterflies, bees & hummingbirds.

Introduction
Flower Anatomy & Structure
Individual Flower Components
Creating a Composition
Adding Supporting Characters (Bees)
Thank you, Wrap up with Pictures & Tips

I begin the video by drawing outlines of the flower components to help you understand the anatomy & structure. Then I will show you how to paint each of the flower parts. Practicing the components individually can be helpful. It will be easier to put them all together in a composition. When teaching how to create a composition, I will show you how to enhance your painting by adding some supporting characters, like bees. (Please watch my lesson Introduction to Color with Butterflies & Bees for more information on painting the bees.)

After the lesson, please stay tuned for tips & close-up pictures of live flowers to compare to the painted ones. By examining the flowers from different angles, you can better understand the shapes & capture the Essence of the beautiful flowers, leaves & vines in your paintings.

The next lesson will be on one of the “Four Gentlemen,” Plum Blossom Trees.

Please be sure to ask any questions in the comments section!

With kindest wishes,
Vena

Intro to YouTube Channel – Get to know Vena Chen & Loving Chinese Brush Painting

For the first video, I want to welcome everyone and give a brief introduction of myself, as well as share my primary goal for creating my new channel: Loving Chinese Brush Painting!

My wish is to give back to this beautiful art that I have loved for so many years, and to help other good artists keep this ancient art alive.

With online tutorials on YouTube, I will share my knowledge of the basic strokes and simple equipment to make Chinese Brush Painting easy to learn. It would be my pleasure and I would feel honored to help students of the new generation to enjoy this thousand-year old art form.

The first few videos will provide the fundamental info: Basic Materials: Introduction to the Four Treasures of the Studio, the Basic Techniques, Ink Techniques and Working with Color. After building a firm foundation, we will begin teaching basic composition techniques and go into more depth on the favored subjects of this ancient art (including the Four Gentlemen).

Acknowledgement and credit to my masters, Master Li Ling Jia and Master Nien-Tsu Hu, for their generosity and kindness and for teaching me the beauty of the 3 Essential Steps to Chinese Brush Painting.

I want to thank all the people who have enriched my life: my family and friends, my students, and all the wonderful people I have met over the years at demonstrations like the great students from the UCI Lunar New Year’s festival.

With kindest wishes,

Vena  😊

For more details, please check out the “Description” section below the video on YouTube. You will find additional info, helpful tips and reminders. Also, we hope the home page, About section and Biography on this website will help viewers get to know Vena.

3 Essential Steps of Chinese Brush Painting:

Ringing in the Year of the Dog 2018!

First, a note from Vena’s team:

Last year – after another successful day celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year at the UCI festival (Year of the Rooster), Vena was overjoyed at the response she had received. The UCI students were so enthusiastic. And, like previous years, it was not just university students that were interested in her beloved art. Professors, staff, families – kids of all ages – had stopped at her demonstration booth at the festival to try it out. She said she wished there was a way to continue to teach this traditional, meditative art. That was when one of Vena’s long-time students suggested that she create video tutorials for YouTube. Making tutorials would allow her to teach but work at her own pace and still be able to stay home to take care of her husband. Later, she laughed and said that afternoon we did not know what we were getting ourselves into! But we did it! We created a channel and posted 4 videos in time for this year’s UCI festival for the Year of the Dog! Since then, we have posted another video and gotten this website and blog started. We are working on 2 more videos (Morning Glory flowers and one of the “Four Gentlemen”: Plum Blossom trees). Next on Vena’s schedule for us is “Rocks” as it is one of the essential components for painting landscapes. (Her list of subjects is a mile long!)

Please be sure to check out the Descriptions section below each of the videos on YouTube. She has provided us with tons of additional info, helpful tips and reminders to post there. We will post that info on her blog too. If you like what you see, please subscribe to her channel and “like” her videos. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, we would love to hear from you!

We are so honored to be a part of Vena’s project to share this art with “kids” of all ages. She is young at heart! Her vitality and energy are our motivation for putting in so many hours, learning everything from scratch. Although she wanted to give us credit for working so hard, we wanted the world to know that she has put forth far more effort than we have in creating this project and bringing it to life. Through these videos and blog, we hope that you will come to enjoy her graciousness and sweetness as much as we have!

Much love and peace to all!

Team Vena 😉

And a note from Vena:

There is so much to learn and practice. Bamboo, plum flowers, birds, fish, landscaping. Loading the brush properly, controlling the water ratio, knowing which side of the paper to use. The special symbolism, traditional philosophy and history of the art. Understanding what the terms “essence” or “artist’s intention” mean. We decided to begin with the fundamental information on tools and techniques with simple examples. Later we will try to do larger, more complete paintings. I am always happy for opportunities to share my knowledge and experience. Teaching in a classroom was an important part of my life. It is very different from this new adventure. Just as I said in the beginning, this is all new to me and my students. We make a good team. We started this project in late spring, worked throughout the hot summer, into fall and made it in time for this Chinese New Year. We finished 5 videos and have a few more on the way. We recorded all videos in my garage, in the early morning, using the light from a skylight. Tracy ran the video camera; Joe did the directing and planning; Stacy did much of the editing and design. I feel so fortunate to have met them. They all work together with the knowledge and resources we have available and they try to do the best they can. Usually after the video recording sessions, we came back to the house for post-taping meetings. Together we went over the subjects which may need to be redone and talked about ideas to improve our lessons. We discussed the technical details, as well as what content might be most useful for beginning students. We would eat lunch, laugh and learn from and about each other. We have enjoyed each other’s company and learned a lot about movie making in the process. We have not decided exactly how often to post new videos. However, we will post at least one each month. There are so many lovely subjects to paint.

A special thank you to all of the students who inspired me to try this new method of teaching. I am grateful to have this opportunity to continue sharing my knowledge. I hope you enjoy the lessons!

With kindest wishes for the New Year,

Vena 😊
